Judo originates from ju-jitsu and was developed by Jigoro Kano in 1882. It incorporates the best aspects of many ju-jitsu schools and has developed into a modern and effective method of training in realistic combat scenarios without risk of serious injury.
Today Judo is an internationally recognised sport. A match can be won by throwing your opponent flat on their back, or failing to do that, by either pinning or submitting your opponent. For those who are not interested in competition ,Judo also teaches effective self defence techniques, as 90% of street fights go to the ground. The University Judo club is associated to the British Judo Council, which maintains a traditional approach to Judo by teaching sport and traditional Kata techniques.
