Dundee University Boat Club is open to both novice and experienced rowers. Full training is given to novices on water technique and on how to handle boats as well as a basic level of boat maintenance. We currently have a large number of novices so no need to worry if you’ve never been in a boat before! All novices will be taken on a complimentary training day at the National Rowing Academy in Motherwell to get a grip of the basics. DUBC is also home to a number of very experienced rowers including some who have competed at an international level. Full training and coaching is provided at both novice and senior level.

We train three times a week including two water sessions at Inchyra (6 miles downstream from Perth) on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. We also have club circuits on Monday evenings which during the summer months are held outside and in the union during winter. Further training can be arranged once people have been put into crews. Last year also saw the clubs first training camp abroad which was held on Lake Bled in Slovenia and gave members the opportunity to row on the course for the 2011 World Championships and alongside Slovenia’s Olympic squad.

We race throughout the year and throughout the UK. In the past year we have participated in BUSA down in Nottingham, the Scottish University Championships at Strathclyde Park, the Scottish Championships and have raced at Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness. All races are open to novice competitors as well as the more senior rowers. Last year we also held the annual Tayforth race at our own boathouse for the first time. This involved competitors from Heriot Watt University, St. Andrews University and Stirling Rowing Club. The club also organises a 12 hour sponsored row as its annual fundraiser which whilst being hard work is one of the most fun and banterful events of the year.

The club is also always looking for new coxes. These are the people that steer the boat and motivate and encourage the rowers during training and races and are most definitely an essential part of any crew. Ideally coxes are small and loud but anybody is welcome to come and give it a go! Full training and coaching is given to all coxes and no experience is required.

Social events are a huge part of DUBC. We have at least one social a week as well as initiations at the start of the year, a Christmas dinner, Burn’s night supper and an annual dinner. In addition we receive free food from our sponsor bar after training on Wednesdays and after races. We also receive fantastic discounts on drink and food!

Perspective members are always welcome to come and train with us or come and join us at one of our many social events. So whether you’re looking to try out a fun new sport or are looking to train more seriously, DUBC can provide you with the opportunity to train at a level suited to you. Rowing is one of the few sports which uses every muscle in the body making it a fantastic way to get fit, stay in shape and lose weight! There’s also the chance to make great new friends and participate in some excellent banter. The club is also about to get a long awaited extension to the boat house and we are planning on significantly improving training facilities over the next year so there has never been a more time exciting to join DUBC.
